Welcome to Term 3.
Looking ahead to what is coming up this term:
Monday 7th August: Appearance Day of Lord Balaram
Tuesday 15th August: Janmastami (Birth of Lord Krishna)
Wednesday 16th August: Appearance Day of Srila Prabhupada (no school on this day)
Tuesday 29th August: Radhastami (Birth of Srimati Radharani)
Tuesday 29th August: Northwestern Zone Cross Country
Wednesday 27th September: Interschool Volleyball Competition
Unfortunately we had a clash with the netball tournament. The girls had been training so nicely but as it turned out the competition day was the same day as Lord Krishna’s birthday so we made a joint decision to forgo the netball competition. I was looking forward to taking the first ever girls sports team to an event! However, this historic event will have to wait!
The Norwest zone interschool speech competition is to be held on:
Learning Focus this term:
Writing: this term we are focusing on Persuasive writing techniques. We will be learning about these techniques then using them in our speeches. We will also cover a unit on figurative language to help students enliven their narrative writing.
Reading: this term we are focusing on sustaining reading and comprehension over longer periods by completing a novel study. Students will be guided through a novel/junior novel with their reading group. There will be an expectation to keep up with the required reading each week and lots of discussion, comprehension questions and vocabulary expansion.
Maths: each group (the groups all have maths names this year) has a slightly different focus for the term.
Fractions and Decimals will continue with work we started last term developing an understanding of decimals – including strategies for adding/subtracting, rounding decimals and converting decimals to fractions and vice versa. We will also look at multiplication and division strategies this term.
Percentages will develop their understanding of fractions/decimals and percentages and be able to convert percentages to fractions and decimals and vice versa. They will also learn strategies to find a percentage of a quantity – both with and without using a calculator. Negative numbers will also be introduced this term – adding and subtracting negative numbers.
Integers will continue to the unit on ratios. The are learning to solve simple rate problems using multiplication, reduce ratios to their simplest terms and find equivalent ratios with a common factor or multiplier. The will also cover a unit on basic algebra including: understand algebraic terminology, simplify and expand basic algebra equations (add/sub/mult and div), write phrases as algebraic expressions.
Our strand maths for this term is: Geometry
Inquiry: for inquiry this term the students will be completing a project of their choice, pursuing their own interests. There is however an overarching topic to the term which is holistic health. We will be learning about the electromagnetic spectrum and in particular the effects electromagnetic radiation from devices such as cell phones, laptops and wifi. We will also understand health as necessary to be looked at in three areas: physical health, mental/emotional health and spiritual health.
Shastra: This terms focus is Vaisnava Etiquette – this will be linked to our health topic (spiritual health!) and we will study/discuss text 2 & 3 of Srila Rupa Goswami’s Nectar of Instruction (Sri Upadesamrta) as well as the nine processes for devotional service. We will continue to learn new verses from the Bhagavad gita and we also have many songs, poems and verses to learn for the whole school performance for Janmastami.
Without writing anything further, please do feel free to keep in contact at: email@example.com and I look forward to seeing you at the three way conferences towards to end of the term.
