Below is an overview of what we will be learning in Term 1….
Gaura Purnima – Appearance Day Celebration of Lord Chaitanya
Please visit the temple website for further details as the festivals grow closer. www.harekrishna.org.nz
Reports will be sent when from Jagannath class your child has spent 6months (progress report) and 1 year at school (Anniversary report).
Values and Shastra –
The main value we will be concentrating on this term is Wisdom. These values will be integrated throughout the curriculum. In philosophy we will beinvestigating “Who Am I?” which will be integrated into our topic unit. We will also be looking at different religions – this term, Buddhism.
As usual we will be learning simple Vaisnava prayers and slokas as well as taking the children on regular temple visits. The main festival focus is Lord Nityananda and Lord Chaitanya’ Appearance days. We will also be learning devotional practices such as temple etiquette and how to offer flowers and incense.
In English this term, we will focus on enriching oral language which transfers to both writing and reading. We will be continuing with our spelling/phonics program and children will be grouped for instruction according to their age and ability.
Shared and guided reading groups as well as time for independent book box reading will be part of our daily routines. We have an interactive program for learning sight words and lots of hands on materials for reinforcement.
Our new entrants will need lots of handwriting practice. You can help by encouraging your child to practice their writing from the correct starting point.
Children will be grouped according to their Math stage ability. This is necessary because we have some new entrant children, as well as children in all stages through their first year. The focus on strategies in adding and subtracting will also continue. Number knowledge which includes identification, ordering and place value will be a daily foundational practice.
Children this term will also learn some early Statistics concepts such as collecting data and recording the data into picture graphs
We will be revising Sanskrit/Maori numbers and focusing on Greetings and Family members.
Integrated Topic Studies –English/Shastra /Social Studies
This term’s inquiry unit is centered around the topic…All about Me and You – Getting Along Together. In this unit we will be learning about who we actually are both spiritually as well as our material family and friends; what our likes and dislikes are; how we like to be treated and how we should treat each other. We will also be exploring our roles and responsibilities, firstly as a devotee and within our family and community. Shastra, Math, language, and social sciences will be integrated into the topic
The arts including visual, drama and dance this term will be centred on the festival celebrations for the term.
Singing, which involves singing songs, rhymes and devotional bhajans as well as verses (slokas) will continue happening weekly where we will combine with Year 2 Krishna Balarama class
Health and PE
We are continuing our School wide social skills curriculum called Skills for Growing. These units foster essential life and citizenship skills. These units integrate very well with our Special Character and we will cover values such as responsibility, good judgement, self-discipline and respect for others. We will also be continuing to build upon development of fundamental motor skills with a focus on flexibility. The focus for Term 1 is Building a School Community and Service Learning.
Homework starts with the second week of each term. There is no homework on the weekends or school holidays.
Please send your child’s book bag back each day so we can send a new book for reading at home. Books will get damaged if they are not in the book bag, so if your child forgets they will not receive a fresh reading book for that day.
